Throughout history settlers have made their mark on Lichfield from the buildings they created, to the wars they fought and the roads they laid. Features from across the centuries are still evident, including Roman roads (Ryneild Street - A38 or Watling Street - A5). The village of Wall is famous for being a military staging post and still has roman remains. St. Chade, the Patron Saint of Mercia was buried here and many pilgrims visited his Shrine.

Bishops later made Lichfield their home, fortifying the Close surrounding the Cathedral and setting out the streets in a medieval grid pattern. The Civil War later raged in the district, with the city of Lichfield having three sieges and the Cathedral suffering much damage.
